Pasadena allows backyard chickens in residential zones with restrictions. Roosters are generally prohibited. Livestock regulations vary by zone under Title 17. The Pasadena Humane Society handles animal control enforcement.
Under PMC Chapter 6.20 (Fowl and Livestock Restrictions), the 2014 amendment allows residents to keep up to 10 chickens without a permit (a permit from Pasadena Humane at no cost may be required). Roosters are prohibited within city limits. Chickens must be kept at least 35 feet from any dwelling, church, school, hospital, or food establishment (unless occupied by the owner) and not within any required zoning setback. Prior to the 2014 amendment, the more restrictive standard required 50 feet from street lines, 50 feet from property lines, and 100 feet from any dwelling. The poundmaster considers impacts on properties within 300 feet when evaluating petitions.
Violations of fowl restrictions are enforced by Pasadena Humane. Non-compliant keeping may result in citations and orders to remove the animals.
