Tallahassee Code of Ordinances Chapter 4 (Animals), Sec. 4-5 governs livestock and fowl. Female chickens (hens) may be kept for non-commercial purposes provided they are confined in a securely enclosed yard or pen at all times and are kept no closer than 20 feet to any neighboring dwelling. There is no limit on the number of hens. One rooster per flock is permitted for flock sustainability; roosters remain subject to the city's noise ordinance. Horses or fowl kept on tracts of five or more contiguous acres, and other livestock on 15 or more contiguous acres, are exempt from these restrictions. Animal Services enforces complaints.
Violations of Sec. 4-5 are code infractions enforced by Animal Services. Fines up to $500 and/or up to 60 days imprisonment may apply for repeat or willful violations.
