Chapter 90 (Animals) of the Jersey City Code requires dogs to be leashed in all public areas. Leashes may not exceed 6 feet in length. Dogs running at large are subject to impoundment by Jersey City Animal Control. Under N.J.S.A. 4:19-15.1, all dogs 7 months or older must be licensed annually with the municipality where they are kept, with proof of current rabies vaccination. A stray dog must be held at a licensed shelter for 7 days. Dogs that have bitten anyone must be quarantined for 10 days regardless of vaccination status.
