Gardena Zoning Code Section 18.42.020 allows only dogs, cats, and adult fowl, so exotic or wild animals are not permitted without a conditional use permit. LA County Code Title 10, adopted by Gardena, also requires a license to keep any wild animal and bars species restricted under state law.
Under Gardena Municipal Code Section 18.42.020, only domesticated dogs, cats, and adult fowl may be kept; any other animal, including exotic or wild species, requires a conditional use permit under Chapter 18.46. Gardena also adopts LA County Code Title 10 through Chapter 6.02. Title 10 defines a wild animal as any nondomestic, exotic, or dangerous animal, including wild-animal or dog hybrids, other mammals, wildfowl, fish, and reptiles, and Section 10.28.060 makes it unlawful to keep a wild animal without first obtaining a license from Animal Care and Control. On top of local rules, California Fish and Game Code and 14 CCR 671 restrict private possession of many exotic species, requiring Fish and Wildlife permits for restricted animals.
Keeping an exotic or wild animal without a Gardena conditional use permit violates Section 18.42.020. Keeping a wild animal without the license required by LA County Code 10.28.060 is a misdemeanor. Possessing a restricted species violates 14 CCR 671.
