Through adopting LA County Code Title 10, Gardena prohibits feeding nondomesticated predators such as coyotes, raccoons, foxes, and opossums, and certain wild rodents. LA County Code Section 10.84.010 makes providing food for these animals a misdemeanor, with narrow exceptions.
Gardena Municipal Code Chapter 6.02 adopts LA County Code Title 10, which includes Chapter 10.84 (Feeding of Certain Predator Animals). Section 10.84.010 makes it unlawful to feed a nondomesticated rodent or nondomesticated mammalian predator. Mammalian predators include coyotes, raccoons, foxes, and opossums, and rodents include ground squirrels. The ban keeps wildlife from becoming habituated to human food in urban neighborhoods. Two narrow exceptions apply: the person lawfully owns the animal and keeps it per Department of Fish and Wildlife requirements, or provides food to a trapped or injured animal after notifying the responsible agency to pick it up. Feeding may be direct or indirect, so accessible pet food or trash that attracts predators can also trigger the prohibition.
Providing food for a covered predator or rodent in violation of adopted LA County Code 10.84.010 is a misdemeanor. Enforcement runs through Gardena Code Enforcement and animal control; repeat feeding creating a nuisance may draw further citations under Chapter 1.16.
