Fort Collins, CO Animal Ordinances: Microchipping (2026)

Sec. 4-197(a)(1)j requires that, as a condition of a permanent Dangerous Animal Permit, the owner or keeper shall have a licensed veterinarian implant an electronic identification microchip in the animal and provide the information contained in the microchip to the Larimer Humane Society. A second, overlapping condition appears in Sec. 4-197(b)(2): when the Municipal Judge does not order a dangerous or vicious animal destroyed, the court may impose additional conditions, including that the owner have a licensed veterinarian implant an electronic identification microchip and again supply the chip information to the Humane Society.

Both provisions sit inside the dangerous-and-vicious-animal enforcement scheme built around Sec. 4-96, which already conditions keeping such an animal on obtaining a permit from the Humane Society or Municipal Judge. There is no parallel requirement anywhere in Chapter 4 that ordinary dogs or cats be microchipped as a condition of ownership or licensing; the chip mandate exists specifically to make dangerous animals traceable after a court finding, not as a general pet-identification law.
