Larimer County sets no fixed number of pets. Sec. 6-81 limits pet animals to the number you can properly maintain in healthy condition without creating a health or safety hazard or a nuisance to neighbors.
Unincorporated Larimer County uses a welfare-based standard rather than a hard cap. Code Sec. 6-81 provides that no person may keep more pet animals than can be properly maintained in a healthy condition without presenting a health or safety hazard or constituting a nuisance to neighbors. "Pet animal" (Sec. 6-1) covers dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and similar household animals, excluding livestock. Every dog must still be licensed (Sec. 6-26) and dogs and cats over four months vaccinated for rabies (Sec. 6-51). Home-rule cities set their own numeric limits; Fort Collins, for example, caps backyard poultry by lot size. Check your city code if you live inside an incorporated town.
Exceeding the Sec. 6-81 standard is a class 2 petty offense; a penalty assessment of $100 for the first offense may apply, and excess animals may be impounded.
