Piscataway, NJ Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Section 5-5.h.1 sets Piscataway's household dog limit at no more than five dogs at any time on any residential, commercial or industrial property, dropping to two dogs for each unit in a townhouse, condominium, apartment or similar multifamily living arrangement. The count excludes puppies under four months old, and the limit does not reach animal hospitals, licensed kennels, pet shops, shelters, pounds or blind training facilities, which are separately licensed under Article III. A household that wants to keep more dogs than Section 5-5.h otherwise allows has one path: apply to and receive approval from the Supervisor of the Department of Community Development to operate as a licensed animal rescue facility, which brings the property under Article III's kennel and shelter licensing rules in Section 5-11 instead of the household cap.

Because Section 5-5 sets no fine of its own for exceeding the cap, a violation is prosecuted under the Township's general penalty in Chapter 1, Section 1-5: a fine of up to $2,000, up to 90 days in the county jail, up to 90 days of community service, or a combination of those penalties, with each day the extra dogs remain on the property counted separately.
