Taylorsville, UT Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

Taylorsville City Code Section 13.11.030(D) sets the baseline: no more than two adult dogs or cats of either species, and no more than a total of four dogs, cats, or Vietnamese potbellied pigs in any combination, kept on a nonnuisance basis strictly for noncommercial family use. Anyone wanting more animals than that must qualify for one of seven named exceptions cross-referenced to Title 8, Chapter 8.12 of the Taylorsville Code: a fancier's permit, animal hobby permit, foster animal permit, dangerous animal permit, guard dog permit, exotic animal permit, or feral cat colony permit.

The same chapter governs farm animals separately, allowing them only in the R-1-40 Residential District at ratios tied to lot size, such as two large animals per acre or fifty small animals per acre, and permitting Vietnamese potbellied pigs city-wide only under a hobby permit at one pig per 20,000 square feet, capped at two per lot. Outdoor structures housing pets, including dog kennels and runs, must sit at least 10 feet from the property line and 40 feet from neighboring dwellings, and comply with Salt Lake County Health Department rules alongside the city's noise and nuisance ordinances. Backyard chickens run on their own separate track under Section 8.12.140 rather than counting against the four-animal household cap.
