Indio, CA Animal Ordinances: Pet Store Rules (2026)

Under Indio Municipal Code § 92.10, no pet store may display, sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction, give away, or otherwise transfer or dispose of a dog or cat within city limits unless it falls under a listed exemption. Exempt sources are limited to animals bred and reared on-site without prohibited backyard breeding, a publicly operated animal control facility or shelter, and nonprofit rescue or humane organizations, including ones that operate out of a pet store. A store hosting shelter or rescue adoptions must post a certificate of source on each animal's kennel, cage, or enclosure, available to animal control and code enforcement on request. In effect, commercial retail sale of dogs and cats is closed off; adoption is the only path.
