Yorba Linda warns that feeding coyotes or other wildlife can be a violation of the municipal code and result in fines. The city's Coyote Management Plan directs residents to secure food sources and never intentionally feed wildlife.
Yorba Linda's official Coyote Awareness guidance states plainly: 'Never feed coyotes or other wildlife. Feeding wildlife can be a violation of the City's municipal code and result in fines.' The 2024 Coyote Management Plan distinguishes intentional feeding (actively providing food, including through the coyote food chain) from unintentional feeding (accessible pet food, fallen fruit, unsecured trash, and bird feeders that draw rodents). Bird feeders must be kept high enough that coyotes cannot reach the animals they attract, and the area beneath kept clean. The city collaborates with Orange County Animal Care to educate and enforce against sites that provide food to wildlife. California Fish and Game Code 251.1 separately bars intentional feeding of big-game and large predatory mammals.
Intentionally feeding coyotes or other wildlife may be cited as a municipal code violation and result in fines; unsecured trash, pet food, or poorly placed bird feeders can prompt abatement notices. Enforcement targets properties that repeatedly provide food.
