Tustin, CA Building Safety: Door Locking Hardware (2026)

City Code § 8102(k) adds Appendix S, Building Security, to the 2025 California Building Code, applying its door and hardware standards to every building in Tustin, including openings between attached garages and dwelling units. Section S102 sets special provisions for residential dwellings in the R-1, R-2 and R-3 groups: every exterior swinging door, other than a vehicular garage door, including the door from the garage into the house, must use solid-core wood construction at least 1 3/4 inches thick, or panels at least 9/16 inch thick, and must be fitted with a single-cylinder deadbolt that projects at least one inch and embeds at least 3/4 inch into the strike, built to resist cutting-tool attacks.

The cylinder itself needs a guard and at least five pin tumblers, and a dual locking mechanism that retracts both deadbolt and latch from a single interior lever can substitute if it meets the same specifications. Glazing within 40 inches of any door lock must be fully tempered or burglary-resistant glass unless the door uses a double-cylinder deadbolt, and every front exterior door needs a 180-degree door viewer. Section S101 sets parallel hardware standards for garage-type overhead, sliding and accordion doors, and Section S105 bars master keying across separate units in the same tract or commercial development, requiring each unit's locks to use a combination that is interchange-free from every other unit's.
