Cherry Hill, NJ Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 13 establishes the Department of Construction Code Enforcement and Inspections, which includes an Electrical Subcode Official, at Township Hall, 820 Mercer Street, open weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (§ 13-1.1). Under § 13-1.3, "a permit shall be required for all general construction work," which covers electrical work, except ordinary maintenance under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7 that does not violate the code. Electrical subcode fees are itemized in § 13-1.4(a)(3): $50.00 for the first 1 to 50 receptacles or fixtures and $10.00 for each additional 25; $15.00 per item for smaller motors, storable pools, hot tubs, alarm panels and similar devices; $65.00 for service equipment or panels rated up to 225 amperes; and $129.00 for larger equipment up to 1,000 amperes.

Property Maintenance Regulations separately require that "every occupied building shall be provided with an electrical system in compliance with the requirements of this section and the New Jersey Uniform Construction Code: National Electrical Code" (§ 15-40.1), and every dwelling must be served by a main service of at least 60 amperes, three wires (§ 15-40.3). Electrical equipment must be "properly installed and maintained in a safe and approved manner" per the same NEC standard (§ 15-41.1). Appeals from the Electrical Subcode Official's decisions go to the Camden County Construction Board of Appeals under N.J.A.C. 5:23A (§ 13-1.2), not to a Cherry Hill board.
