Oyster Bay, NY Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 107, Electrical Standards, regulates the installation, alteration and removal of wiring for light, heat, power and signal systems of 50 volts or more on all real property in the unincorporated Town. Section 107-9 requires that all electrical wiring and installations be installed, altered or removed only by or under the supervision of a master electrician, unless the work is within the scope of a Class B license, issued to an employee doing work for their own commercial or industrial employer, or a Class C license, issued for limited work such as sign wiring or oil and gas burner installations.

Section 107-10 requires all new wiring, extensions, alterations and removals to conform to the National Electrical Code, specifically its latest edition. Section 107-13 requires that before anyone installs, causes to be installed, or alters electrical wiring, an application for inspection must first be filed with an approved electrical inspection service; doing the work before filing is itself a violation. A five-member Examining Board of Electricians, appointed by the Town Board, examines license applicants and makes recommendations on issuance, suspension, modification or revocation of licenses under Section 107-14.

Homeowners get a narrow exemption under Section 107-5 to do minor electrical work themselves in a one-family dwelling they own and occupy, but only after filing an affidavit, passing a written test administered by the Superintendent of the Division of Buildings, and still having the work inspected by an approved electrical inspection company; amperage-service changes and pool, spa or hot-tub wiring are excluded from the homeowner exemption entirely.
