Rapides Parish, LA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 6½ of the parish code creates the Kisatchie-Delta Regional Code Compliance Office and names a parish building official responsible for administering the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code in the unincorporated areas of Rapides Parish (§ 6½-7). Section 6½-10 codifies that office's administrative manual, which at § 101.5.3 provides that the National Electrical Code governs the installation of electrical systems, including alterations, repairs, replacement, equipment, appliances, fixtures, fittings and appurtenances. Because § 105.1 requires a permit for any regulated work, including erecting, installing, altering, repairing, removing, converting or replacing an electrical system, a homeowner or electrician must apply to the building official and obtain a permit before starting.

Section 105.1.1 lets the building official issue an annual maintenance permit instead of a permit for each individual repair to a business that regularly employs qualified tradespeople on site, provided a detailed record of the work is kept under § 105.1.2. Permit applications expire after 180 days if not pursued in good faith, and an issued permit itself becomes invalid if work has not started within 180 days or is not finished within two years, though the building official may grant 180-day extensions on written request under §§ 105.3.2 and 105.5.

Fee schedules for electrical permits are set by the Kisatchie-Delta Code Compliance Office under § 108.2, and starting electrical work without first pulling the permit doubles the required fee under § 108.3. Temporary electrical service before final completion is allowed under § 107.3, but the temporary installation must still meet National Electrical Code standards for temporary lighting, heat or power.
