Walton County, FL Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Sec. 6-26(6) sets Walton County's Electrical Code as the most recent edition of the National Electric Code, NFPA 70, and every electrical installation in unincorporated Walton County, from new wiring to a service changeover, must meet that edition rather than any county-specific electrical standard. Sec. 6-29(a) makes a permit mandatory whenever an owner, authorized agent, or contractor wants to erect, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace an electrical system regulated by the technical codes, and the base fee, sub-permit fees, and reinspection fees are all set by resolution of the Board of County Commissioners rather than written into the ordinance itself.

Once permitted, the work is checked against Sec. 6-35's list of required inspections, which separately calls out power at the main entrance, electrical changeover on an existing service, and electrical rough-in and electrical, in addition to the final inspection needed for a certificate of occupancy or completion. Starting electrical work before the permit is issued triggers a penalty equal to 100 percent of the usual permit fee, on top of the fee itself, under Sec. 6-29(c). Property owners can cut permit costs by using a private provider for inspections instead of the county: Sec.

6-31 gives a 55 percent discount on permit and sub-permit fees for private-provider inspections and waives the plan review fee entirely. The building official also has authority under Sec. 6-36 to waive or combine inspections, including electrical ones, when test reports or other proof of code compliance make a site visit unnecessary.
