Walton County, FL Building Safety: Fire Sprinkler Requirements (2026)

Walton County Code § 10-28 requires automatic sprinkler systems 'in all structures in excess of three stories in height in accordance with NFPA 13 as adopted by the county,' and separately bars the use of plastic or combustible materials in building the sprinkler system itself. The rule dates to Ordinance No. 82-4 and sits in Chapter 10's fire prevention article alongside the county's broader adoption of the Florida Fire Prevention Code at § 10-41, which the state fire marshal requires local governments to enforce under F.S. § 633.208.

Compliance runs through the inspection structure in §§ 10-26, 10-27 and 10-42. Walton Fire Rescue, part of the Walton County Sheriff's Office, has jurisdiction to enforce the Florida Fire Prevention Code and Chapters 6 and 10 in unincorporated Walton County and in the cities of Freeport and Paxton, except where a municipality or independent fire district is its own authority having jurisdiction. Any qualifying structure over three stories, whether commercial, multifamily or governmental, must clear a fire safety plan review and inspection confirming the sprinkler system and the rest of the Florida Fire Prevention Code before the Walton County Building Department will issue a certificate of occupancy or completion. Existing qualifying buildings can also be subject to periodic inspections under § 10-27(b). Fees for the plan review and inspection are set by resolution of the Board of County Commissioners and go to the county's fire prevention fund.
