Valencia County, NM Building Safety: Elevator Maintenance (2026)

Section 93.06, Amendments to the Fire Code, adopts the International Fire Code with county-specific changes, and one of those changes adds subsection 607.4, Communications, to IFC Chapter 6, Section 607, Building Services and Systems, Elevator Recall and Maintenance. The added text requires that all elevators be equipped with two-way communication equipment and that the equipment be operable at all times, closing a gap in the base code's elevator recall and maintenance provisions. The amendment sits alongside other Chapter 93 Fire Code changes read at the same time, including the section 508.5.4 obstruction rule keeping posts, fences, vehicles, growth, trash and storage away from fire hydrants and control valves, and the section 510.1 identification rule requiring approved, durable signage for fire protection equipment and accessory rooms, so the elevator communications duty is part of a broader set of local building-safety amendments layered onto the adopted Fire Code rather than a stand-alone ordinance.
