Billings enforces the Montana-adopted International Building Code and International Fire Code, which require automatic fire sprinklers in most multi-family, commercial, and high-occupancy buildings, but typically not in standard single-family detached homes.
Through Billings Municipal Code Chapter 6 and the Montana state-adopted IBC and IFC, the city requires NFPA 13, 13R, or 13D automatic sprinkler systems in apartment buildings, hotels, larger commercial occupancies, and assembly uses above thresholds in the codes. Standard single-family detached homes are not generally required to have sprinklers under Montana state policy. Additions and major renovations may trigger sprinkler retrofits when occupancy or fire-area thresholds are crossed. The Billings Fire Department reviews plans and inspects new and remodeled systems alongside the city building department.
Operating without a required functioning sprinkler system can delay or void a certificate of occupancy and lead to enforcement citations through the building department and BFD.
