Bergenfield, NJ Building Safety: Building Inspections (2026)

Section 136-1 creates the Bergenfield Construction Code Department as the Borough's State Uniform Construction Code Enforcing Agency, made up of a Construction Official as chief administrator plus a Building Subcode Official, Plumbing Subcode Official, Electrical Subcode Official, Fire Protection Subcode Official and any further subcode officials the state Commissioner of Community Affairs later adds. L. 1975, c. C. 5:23, and the Borough may retain an outside inspection agency instead of any one subcode official. The public conducts business with the enforcing agency at a single office location, except in emergencies (§136-3).

Fees are set out at § 136-4: the minimum fee for a basic construction permit covering building, plumbing, electrical, elevator or fire protection work is $60 for Use Groups R-3 and R-5, one- and two-family homes and their accessory structures, and $100 for every other subcode and use group. 00 per cubic foot for other use groups, while renovation and repair fees scale with estimated project cost, from $25 per $1,000 on work up to $50,000 down to $19 per $1,000 on work over $100,000.

A certificate of occupancy costs 10% of the construction permit fee, with a $100 minimum, and plan review costs 20% of the eventual permit fee, credited against it.
