Gary, IN Building Safety: Building Inspections (2026)

Subdivision III of the Gary building article, Sections 105-140 through 105-142, governs how permitted work gets inspected. Section 105-140 requires the building commissioner to make, or cause to be made, whatever inspections are necessary to confirm that work under a permit fully complies with the article and the permit's own terms; if an inspector arrives and finds the work incomplete or not ready, the code allows the commissioner to charge a reinspection fee under the article's fee provisions. Section 105-141 brings the fire department into the process for fire-related systems: the fire chief or a designated representative must assist the building commissioner in inspecting fire suppression, detection and alarm systems and report the results back to the commissioner, so a single building's electrical, structural and fire-safety compliance is checked by the officials with the relevant expertise.

Section 105-142 gives inspectors legal access: on presenting proper credentials, the building commissioner or an authorized representative may enter, at reasonable times, any building, structure or premises in the city to carry out any duty the article imposes, which covers routine construction inspections as well as complaint-driven checks. These inspection powers sit alongside the commissioner's Section 105-80 authority to administer the article without arbitrary discretion and the Section 105-81 power to stop noncompliant work outright, so a failed inspection can lead directly to a written stop order until the deficiency is corrected and the reinspection fee, if any, is paid.
