Alpharetta, GA Business Licensing & Operations: Auto Repair on Residential Property (2026)

There is no provision in the City of Alpharetta's code specifically addressing auto repair as a home business; a resident who wants to work on vehicles from home falls under the same UDC Section 2.3.3.A Home Occupations conditions that govern every other home-based business. Several of those conditions are especially hard for a vehicle-repair operation to meet. Condition 4 requires that 'no merchandise or articles shall be stored other than inside the dwelling unit,' which reaches parts, tools and vehicles awaiting repair. Condition 5 allows only one business vehicle on the premises, capped at a carrying capacity of one and a half tons with no more than six tires or two axles, parked only in a carport, garage, or an approved side or rear parking space, never in the street or right-of-way.

Condition 10 caps the motor power used in the home occupation at a combined 3 horsepower, or 1 horsepower for any single motor, other than ordinary electric appliance motors, which rules out most compressors, lifts, or larger repair equipment. Together, these standards do not name auto repair as prohibited, but they leave almost no room for a functioning vehicle-repair business: no outdoor work bays, no fleet of customer or shop vehicles, and no heavy-duty powered equipment. A resident wanting to run an actual repair shop would need a property zoned for automotive service and service station use under Table 2.2, which is not available in residential districts.
