Alpharetta, GA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 2.3.6.C of the Unified Development Code sets the approved material list for any fence or wall used as a fence in the City of Alpharetta: wood protected from decay through naturally durable species or pressure treatment, metal, brick, block, vinyl or stone. Plywood and other sheet goods are prohibited outright as a fencing material, regardless of zoning district, which rules out the cheapest fencing option builders sometimes use around construction sites or vacant lots. Security-style materials get a separate, tighter rule: barbed wire, razor wire and electrically charged fencing are permitted by right only in the AG (agricultural) and RE districts, the city's lowest-density and rural-character zones.

Everywhere else in the City of Alpharetta, those materials are not automatically banned but require administrative review and approval before installation, meaning a property owner outside AG or RE has to get sign-off from Community Development rather than simply putting the fence up. The material rule pairs with the appearance standard in Section 2.3.6.D, which requires the finished side of any fence to face away from the fence-owner's own property and bars bright or primary colors and visually distracting finishes, and with the separate ban on privacy or chainlink fencing in most front yards unless the required landscape strip is in place. Community Development enforces the material standard whenever it reviews a fence during a related permit or responds to a complaint about a nonconforming installation.
