Alpharetta, GA Fence Regulations: Fence Permit Requirements (2026)

Section 2.3.6.E of the Unified Development Code sets a narrow but firm rule for fence permitting in the City of Alpharetta: no construction permit is required to erect a fence or wall used as a fence, as long as the structure is built in accordance with the standards the same Section lays out. Those standards cover height (6 feet on residential property, 8 feet on non-residential property), placement near intersections and driveways, approved materials, and finished-side orientation, all found in the surrounding subsections of 2.3.6.

Because the permit exemption is conditioned on compliance, a fence that exceeds the height cap, uses a prohibited material such as plywood or unauthorized barbed wire, or sits inside the visibility triangle at a corner falls outside the exemption and becomes a Section 2.3.6 violation even though no permit was ever pulled. The one carve-out in Section 2.3.6.E runs the other way: if the fence incorporates signage, a sign permit is required regardless of whether the fence itself needed one, since signs are regulated separately under the Ordinance's sign provisions.

Community Development still reviews fence compliance when it comes up during a related permit, such as a pool or accessory structure application, or in response to a complaint, even though a standalone fence never triggers its own building permit application in the City of Alpharetta.
