Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission licenses dispensaries statewide. Huntsville City Council passed resolution allowing medical dispensaries within city limits subject to zoning. Licensing delayed by ongoing state litigation.
Medical cannabis dispensaries (licensed Integrated Facilities and Dispensaries under SB 46) are permitted in Huntsville. The Huntsville City Council adopted a resolution opting in to allow medical cannabis dispensaries rather than opting out as some Alabama cities did. Dispensaries must locate in compliance with Huntsville zoning, typically in commercial or industrial districts, and cannot be within 1,000 feet of schools, daycares, or churches per state law Ala. Code 20-2A-54. Only patients with qualifying conditions and a valid medical cannabis card issued by the AMCC may purchase. Recreational dispensaries do not exist and are illegal. Licensing has been delayed by ongoing litigation over commission licensing decisions as of late 2024.
