Any new subdivision in unincorporated Iredell County must include a stormwater drainage plan built to NCDOT drainage standards before the preliminary plat is approved. The rule bars discharge into sanitary sewers and sets minimum grades and side slopes for drainage courses, with a flat ban on run-off flowing directly into Lake Norman, Lookout Shoals Lake or the Catawba River.

Prior Plan Approval. No person shall undertake any land-disturbing activity that will disturb one (1) acre or more, or one half (1/2) acre or more in a water supply watershed area, on a tract unless, thirty (30) or more days prior to initiating the activity, a Plan for the activity is filed with and approved by the County.

Flood Zones

Any development inside an Iredell County Special Flood Hazard Area needs a Floodplain Development Permit from the Floodplain Administrator before work starts. Violations are a Class 1 misdemeanor carrying up to a $100 fine or 30 days in jail per day of continued violation.
