2 rules for unincorporated St. Clair County, Illinois.
Verified from official government sources
Backyard grilling at a single-family home is unrestricted in St. Clair County. Under the adopted International Fire Code, charcoal and open-flame grills may not be used on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at multi-family buildings β with exceptions for small 1-pound propane devices and sprinklered buildings.
IFC (2012) Sec. 308.1.4; St. Clair County Bldg. Regs. Sec. 7-1-6
Charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices shall not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet (3049 mm) of combustible construction.
St. Clair County has no ordinance specifically regulating backyard smokers. Wood and pellet smokers used for cooking are treated as cooking devices, not open burning, so they are allowed at homes. Smoke that drifts persistently onto neighbors can still be pursued as a private nuisance, and multi-family fire-code clearances apply.
