Obstruction Rules

Story County's Board of Supervisors has formally found that fences, ditches, drainage-tile changes, trash, junk, abandoned vehicles, billboards, signs and hazardous mailbox supports placed in the secondary road right-of-way create hazardous obstructions and hinder snow removal. Chapter 33 treats unpermitted placement of any of these as unauthorized use of county right-of-way.

Encroachment Permits

Anyone wanting to place a structure, fence, driveway, mailbox support or other improvement in a Story County secondary road right-of-way needs written pre-authorization from the County Engineer first. Story County Code § 33.04 makes that authorization a no-charge permit that the Engineer can condition, limit or bond.
