Sacramento enforces a juvenile curfew under City Code Chapter 9.36. Minors under 18 are prohibited from being in public places during curfew hours: 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM Sunday through Thursday, and midnight to 5:00 AM Friday and Saturday nights. Exceptions exist for minors accompanied by a parent/guardian, traveling to or from work, on an emergency errand, or engaged in First Amendment-protected activities.
The curfew applies to all minors under 18 in any public place, street, or establishment during curfew hours. Exceptions include: minors accompanied by a parent, guardian, or responsible adult over 21; minors going to or from a place of employment; minors on an emergency errand for a parent; minors engaged in lawful First Amendment activities; minors returning home from a school, religious, or civic organization activity; and minors with written permission from a parent for a specific activity. Parents who knowingly allow curfew violations may also face penalties.
First-time curfew violations typically result in the minor being transported home and a warning to parents. Repeat violations may result in fines up to $250 for minors and/or parents, community service requirements, and mandatory parent education classes.
