Roanoke County, VA Curfew Laws: Park Curfew (2026)

Section 15-9(1) of the Roanoke County Code, headed 'Park operating policy,' sets the default schedule for every county-owned park: parks are open to the public every day of the year from one-half hour after daylight until one-half hour before sunset. Three exceptions widen that window. so evening leagues and practices can finish under the lights. Second, a park facility with its own posted 'special hours of operation' follows those posted hours instead of the general daylight-to-dusk rule, letting the county set different hours for a facility like a community center or a splash pad.

Third, the director or a designee can grant 'select exceptions' after receiving a special request, giving the county room to authorize an after-hours use on a case-by-case basis. The code separately exempts Explore Park from this whole provision, so its operating hours are set on their own schedule rather than tied to sunrise and sunset county-wide. Beyond the hours rule itself, § 15-9(2) gives the director authority to close any section of a park to the public at any time, temporarily or for a stated interval, whenever the director finds it reasonably necessary, and posted 'Closed to the Public' or 'No Trespassing' notices are separately enforceable under § 15-8(6).

Being in a park after its posted or default closing time, or in a closed section, is a violation of Chapter 15 and, like any other violation of that chapter, is punishable as a class 4 misdemeanor under § 15-10.
