Alpharetta, GA Data Centers & Crypto Mining: Data Center Noise Limits (2026)

Under Sec. 2.7.2.1 of the Unified Development Code, a data center use in the City of Alpharetta is a defined category, a building or complex where a substantial share of gross floor area houses computer or data processing equipment, and it carries its own supplemental standards beyond the underlying zoning district. The first of those standards is acoustic: noise testing is required prior to issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy to confirm compliance with the city's Noise Ordinance. That means a completed data center cannot open until the city has proof, gathered after construction, that the operating facility, with its cooling systems, generators and mechanical plant running, meets the noise limits the city otherwise enforces citywide.

The same subsection layers on related site standards for the same use: exterior lighting must use fully shielded fixtures aimed downward and away from adjacent roads and properties, principal buildings must be at least 20 feet tall, and no data center building may sit within 100 feet of a collector or local roadway. Chain-link fencing cannot be visible from public roadways, and mechanical equipment at ground level or on rooftops must be screened. Because the noise test is tied to the CO rather than the building permit, a developer can finish construction and still be held up: if post-construction sound readings show noncompliance with the Noise Ordinance, the city can withhold occupancy until the operator adds sound attenuation, such as enclosures around chillers or generator exhaust silencers, and retests. The rule exists specifically because these facilities run continuous mechanical cooling and backup power equipment that residential and mixed-use neighbors do not otherwise experience.
