Lawton, OK Drone Rules: Recreational Drones (2026)

Section 7-3-2-343 of the Lawton City Code, titled 'Unmanned aircraft systems,' requires that all UAS operations, including recreational drone flights, be conducted in strict compliance with every applicable Federal Aviation Administration regulation. The section then goes further than simply restating federal law: it designates the area within five miles of, and on, airport property as a local no-drone zone, and it declares any unauthorized UAS operation inside that zone strictly prohibited unless the flight has been specifically authorized by the FAA. Because Lawton-Fort Sill Regional Airport sits inside the city, the five-mile radius sweeps in large parts of town, meaning a hobbyist flying a drone from a backyard or park near the airport can be operating in a restricted zone even without crossing onto airport grounds.

§ 44809 for FAA airspace rules does not exempt a flier from this local zone restriction. Lawton adopted this ordinance in Chapter 7 of its code, the business and airport regulations article, tying enforcement to airport safety rather than to the separate critical-infrastructure drone statute found elsewhere in the code.
