San Marcos is located approximately 10 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in north San Diego County. The city is entirely outside the California Coastal Zone as mapped by the California Coastal Commission. Therefore, Coastal Development Permits (CDPs) under the California Coastal Act are not required for any projects within San Marcos city limits. Properties near the western city boundary that are close to unincorporated areas should verify their jurisdiction, as some adjacent unincorporated county land may fall within coastal influence zones. For projects in the coastal zone of nearby cities (Carlsbad, Oceanside, Encinitas), contact those jurisdictions directly.
