Anchorage has no general municipal idling-time limit, but AMC Title 9 prohibits leaving an unattended vehicle running with the key in the ignition on a public street, with limited remote-start exceptions.
Unlike Lower-48 cities with strict idling caps, Anchorage tolerates extended cold-start warmups during winter months when temperatures routinely fall below zero. AMC Title 9 traffic provisions, however, prohibit leaving a running, unattended vehicle on a public street unless equipped with a factory remote-start that locks the doors. Diesel commercial trucks are subject to Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation air-quality guidance during winter inversion events, and idling next to schools and hospitals is discouraged. No civil idling fine schedule exists in the municipal code.
Leaving an unattended running vehicle without remote-start lock-out is a traffic infraction under AMC Title 9 with a fine in the $50 to $100 range; repeat offenses can support a vehicle theft-risk surcharge.
