Asheville, NC Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Sec. 7-10-3(a) of the City Code sets the fence and wall height standards. Fences and walls located outside the minimum front, side, or rear setback may be built to any height permitted for buildings in that zoning district, effectively removing a height cap for interior yard fencing set well back from the property line. Inside the required setback area, though, the rule tightens: fences and walls within the minimum front setback cannot exceed 6 feet, and fences and walls within the minimum side or rear setback cannot exceed 8 feet, unless the structure is serving as a retaining wall, in which case the retaining-wall standards of Sec.

7-10-5 apply instead of the fence height cap. No fence or wall of any height may obstruct the sight visibility triangles required by subsection 7-11-2(g). A stricter limit applies specifically at those sight triangles: Sec. 5 feet within the sight visibility triangle of a public street, private street, or driveway, whether that triangle falls on the subject property or an adjoining one. All fences and walls must also comply with the North Carolina State Building Code, the Asheville Fire Prevention Code, and the Asheville Standard Specifications and Details Manual. Electrified security fencing is separately restricted under Sec. S. Department of Homeland Security.
