Bensalem, PA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 232-583(d) sets Bensalem's baseline fence height at six and one-half feet for any front, side, or rear yard, unless another section of the zoning ordinance specifies otherwise. That height drops to four feet for a fence abutting a private driveway or standing beyond the front building setback line, and, on a corner lot with multiple front yards, for the fence running along the street line the principal building actually fronts; a corner lot's other, non-driveway front yard street lines can still reach the six-and-one-half-foot height.

Height is always measured from grade level, not from the top of any berm or retaining wall beneath the fence. Section 232-583(d)(9) layers on the Township's separate vision-obstruction rule at Section 232-584: no fence, wall, or planting between two feet and seven feet high may sit inside the clear sight triangle at a corner lot, a triangle measured 25 feet from the intersection of two local streets, 35 feet where one street is a collector, and 45 feet where one is an arterial. Residential fences are also restricted to specific materials, stockade, ranch rail, or open metal mesh or chain link, with barbed wire, electrified fencing, and bright or multicolored finishes barred outright.

Section 232-583(e) requires a permit from the Township Department of Building and Planning before construction, though repairing or renovating an existing fence needs no new permit.
