In Carlsbad R-1 residential zones, fences within 20 feet of the street property line may not exceed 42 inches (3.5 ft). Beyond that, fences may be up to 6 feet. Corner lots have safety triangle restrictions.
Under CMC Chapter 21.10 (R-1 One-Family Residential Zone), structures in the access portion of a lot — including fences — shall not exceed 42 inches (3.5 feet) within 20 feet of the street property line. Beyond 20 feet from the street property line, fences may be up to 6 feet in height. On corner lots, within a triangular safety area defined by front and side lot lines with points 15 feet from their intersection, no fence or physical obstruction higher than 42 inches is permitted. Good Neighbor Fence Act (CA Civil Code §841) applies to shared boundary fences. Properties in the Coastal Zone may face additional requirements from the California Coastal Commission and Carlsbad's Local Coastal Program.
Non-compliant fences are subject to code enforcement, requiring permits or removal.
