El Cajon, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

170 sets El Cajon's baseline fence standard: a wall, fence or hedge up to 42 inches tall may go anywhere on a lot, and once behind the required front yard line, height can increase to six feet. The exception is a reverse corner lot, where anything taller than 42 inches must stay at least 10 feet from the side exterior property line so it does not block the corner sightline. Open metal or heavy-gauge wire fencing up to six feet tall is allowed anywhere on the lot if it meets extra standards: open-bar metal construction with at least four inches between elements, or nonmalleable wire mesh at least eight-gauge with openings no smaller than one inch, and it may never use chain link.

All fencing must preserve sight distance at driveways and street intersections, and posts, pilasters or columns can rise to six feet if spaced at least eight feet on center and no wider than 16 inches. Barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, corrugated metal or plastic, tarps, and electrified wire of any kind are banned outright under subsection E. 020(C). 210 bars any fence, wall or hedge, whatever its height or location, from blocking pedestrian or vehicular visibility, giving the director, planning commission or city council authority to order a fence lowered if it creates a sightline hazard.

180 requires a six-foot decorative masonry or concrete wall along the shared line, stepped down to 42 inches within the residential lot's front or exterior side setback.
