Cheyenne, WY Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

In Cheyenne's residential zoning districts (AR, LR, MR, HR, NR-1, NR-2, NR-3, MUB, MUR, MUE), residential uses in non-residential districts, and the CBD District, fences in the front yard setback -- the area between the front property line and the principal building's front line -- cannot exceed four feet. Behind that line, fences may rise to six feet, measured from finished grade at the base of the fence. Residential fencing materials are limited to brick, stone, wood, vinyl, wrought iron, concrete block or chain link unless the Board of Adjustment approves an alternative through a conditional use permit. Fences also can't sit in a right-of-way, a sight triangle, or within two feet of a public sidewalk. Fences of 6 feet or less are exempt from a building permit under the city's building code amendments.
