In Dublin's residential zoning districts, fences are limited to 4 feet in the front yard and 6 feet in side, street-side, and rear yards. Heights are set by the Zoning Ordinance (Chapter 8.72) and the City's Community Development Department handout, not invented numbers.
The City of Dublin regulates residential fence, wall, and hedge heights through its Zoning Ordinance Chapter 8.72 (Landscaping and Fencing Regulations). According to the City's Community Development Department handout 'Residential Fence, Wall, and Hedge Regulations' (dated 2/2023), the maximum permitted heights in residential zoning districts are: front yard 4 feet; side yard 6 feet; street side yard 6 feet; rear yard 6 feet; and within a Traffic Visibility Area, 2 feet 6 inches. Fences located outside of a required yard may reach 8 feet. A fence or wall in a side yard, street side yard, or rear yard may be extended an additional 2 feet (8 feet total) only through the use of a framed wooden lattice capable of admitting not less than 50% light; solid Plexiglas inserts are not permitted. The City has also indicated a fence or wall may reach up to 12 feet where approved through Site Development Review. Height is measured upward from the finished ground level beneath the fence. These figures apply to standard residential districts; lots in Planned Development (PD) zoning or with specific development plans may carry different standards, so verify your property's zoning with the Planning Division.
Fences exceeding the permitted height (for example, a solid 8-foot rear fence without the qualifying lattice top, or any structure over 30 inches in a Traffic Visibility Area) are zoning violations enforced by the Community Development Department and may require modification or removal. Contact the Planning Division at (925) 833-6610.
