Amplified music rules in Dublin, CA — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
Under a 2026 amendment to Dublin Municipal Code Chapter 5.28, amplified sound from speakers, stereos, amplifiers, and musical instruments is prohibited in residential areas 8:00 p.m.-10:00 a.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10:00 p.m.-10:00 a.m. Friday-Saturday. The general nuisance standard applies at all other times.
Dublin's 2026 noise-ordinance amendment created objective time limits for amplified sound in residential areas as part of a new "Prohibited Acts" section in Chapter 5.28. The rule prohibits amplified sound from devices and instruments, expressly including amplifiers, stereos, speakers, and musical instruments, between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and between 10:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The later Friday and Saturday start (10:00 p.m.) gives a bit more leeway for weekend gatherings, while the earlier weeknight cutoff (8:00 p.m.) protects sleep before workdays and school days. These windows were adopted to replace a purely subjective standard that the City said made enforcement challenging. Outside the prohibited hours, amplified music is allowed but remains subject to Section 5.28.020, which still bars loud, unnecessary, or habitual noise that disturbs a reasonable person of normal sensitivity, so even afternoon amplified sound can be addressed if it is unreasonably loud or persistent. The Council approved the changes on May 19, 2026, with a second reading June 2, 2026, and the rules take effect 30 days after adoption. Enforcement is by Code Enforcement or Dublin Police Services, with education and voluntary compliance emphasized first. These limits target residential areas; permitted special events or commercial venues may be handled under separate permit conditions.
Producing amplified sound in a residential area during the prohibited hours violates the Chapter 5.28 "Prohibited Acts" provision and is enforceable as a misdemeanor, up to a $500 fine and/or 30 days in county jail under Section 5.28.030. The City generally seeks voluntary compliance before citing.
