Idaho Falls's zoning code sets no general numeric height cap for residential fences. The only height rule limits fences to three feet (3') within fifteen feet (15') of a front lot line abutting a street, plus clear-view-triangle limits at corners, alleys, and driveways.
The City of Idaho Falls Comprehensive Zoning ordinance (Title 11) does not impose a single maximum height (for example, a flat six-foot rear-yard limit) on residential fences. Instead, fence height is regulated for visibility and safety near the street. Section 11-4-8(C) states that no fence, wall, hedge, or other sight-obscuring object more than three feet (3') in height is allowed within fifteen feet (15') of the front yard lot line contiguous to a street. A chain-link fence without slats is not considered sight-obscuring for this purpose. Separately, the clear-view-triangle rule in Section 11-4-7(A) provides that shrubs, fences, and walls in those triangles 'shall not exceed three feet (3') in height.' The triangle is formed at intersections by points thirty feet (30') from where the lot lines meet, and at alleys/driveways by points fifteen feet (15') back. Because the code is silent on a maximum for interior side and rear yards, taller privacy fences are generally allowed there, but the city still reviews every fence through a permit. Always confirm exact limits with the Building Division before building.
Fences exceeding three feet within fifteen feet of a street-facing front lot line, or any fence obstructing the clear-view triangle, can be ordered modified or removed and may trigger zoning enforcement; building without the required fence permit is also a violation.
