OCCO Zoning Code Section 7-9-137.5 regulates fence and wall heights in unincorporated Orange County. Fences in front setback areas are limited to 3.5 feet; side and rear fences may reach 6 feet. Visibility triangles at intersections have additional restrictions.
Under OCCO Section 7-9-137.5, the maximum height of fences, walls, and hedges in any required front setback area is three and one-half (3.5) feet. Fences in side and rear setback areas not adjoining a street may be up to six (6) feet. Where a side or rear property line adjoins a street, the maximum is 6 feet to a depth of 20 feet from the front property line. Within the visibility triangle at intersections, fences and walls may not exceed 3.5 feet to maintain sight lines for vehicle and pedestrian safety. A building permit is required for walls or fences exceeding 6 feet in height, and engineered plans may be required.
Non-compliant fences may receive a notice of violation from OC Code Enforcement. Property owners are given a compliance period to reduce fence height or obtain required permits. Continued non-compliance may result in administrative fines.
