Under Lakeville City Code 11-21-5, residential fences may generally be up to six feet (6') tall. A rear-yard fence may reach eight feet (8') only if set back 10 feet from the rear lot line and 5 feet from any side lot line. Front-yard fences are limited to four feet (4') and must be at least 75% open.
Lakeville regulates fence height by yard location under Section 11-21-5 of the zoning ordinance. The standard maximum height for a residential fence is six feet (6'), which applies in interior side yards and rear yards. A taller fence between six and eight feet (8') is allowed only in the rear yard, and only when it is set back at least ten feet (10') from the rear lot line and five feet (5') from any side lot line. Fences located within the front yard are held to a lower standard: they cannot exceed four feet (4') in height and must be at least seventy-five percent (75%) open to allow the passage of air and light. On corner lots, fences in a side yard abutting a public right-of-way must be set back ten feet (10') from that property line for lots of record established after January 1, 1994, except where the traffic sight visibility triangle (Section 11-16-15) requires a greater setback. Within that visibility triangle, nothing may obstruct views above three feet (3') in height. Commercial and industrial districts carry separate standards. Always confirm the rule for your specific zoning district with Lakeville Community Development before building.
Building a fence taller than allowed for its yard, or placing a tall rear-yard fence without the required 10' rear and 5' side setbacks, violates Section 11-21-5. The Zoning Administrator may require correction or removal, and an over-height or improperly placed fence can be deemed a nuisance subject to abatement proceedings.
