Bexar County does not regulate fence heights in unincorporated areas. The county confirms there are no zoning regulations outside city limits. Texas counties lack general police power to zone (Local Gov Code Ch. 233). San Antonio's Unified Development Code Β§35-514 sets 6 ft side/rear and 3 ft front-yard sight-triangle limits inside city limits.
Bexar County's official FAQ confirms: 'In the unincorporated areas of the County (any area not within a municipal city limits) there are no zoning regulations.' The county has no fence height ordinance. Property owners outside city limits should check deed restrictions, HOA covenants, and Bexar County Infrastructure Services for any platting or drainage rules. Inside San Antonio city limits, UDC Β§35-514 caps standard residential fences at six (6) feet for side/rear yards. Front-yard fences on corner lots cannot exceed three (3) feet within 25 ft of the street curb (sight triangle), or within 15 ft of a driveway. Predominantly open front-yard fencing up to 6 ft is allowed by right on lots of 20,000+ sq ft, or by special exception on smaller lots. Fences up to 8 ft are allowed where ground elevation differs by 4+ ft, where the fence abuts an alley or non-local street, or where a residential lot abuts multifamily, commercial, industrial, or park use. UDC Β§35-399.04 permits height modifications via special exception from the Board of Adjustment. Pool barriers must be at least 48 inches under Texas-adopted IRC/ISPSC; chain link prohibited for new pool enclosures.
