Rockdale County, GA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Section 214-6, Fences, walls and hedges, applies to every fence, wall and hedge in unincorporated Rockdale County and pairs its general provisions with a Table of Fence, Wall and Hedge Requirements sorted by zoning category. For the residential group, A-R, W-P, CRS, CSD, CSO, R-1, R-2, MUR, RM, M-H, R-1A, R-1B and R-3, the table caps height at 4 feet along any street right-of-way and 6 feet along interior side and rear property lines; the nonresidential group (CID, O-1, OBP, C-1, C-2, NC, MxD) and industrial group (M-1, M-2) are each allowed 6 feet along the street and either 6 or 8 feet along interior lines.

Every fence must sit at least 3 feet back from the right-of-way along any property line, and on a corner lot that setback must increase further to provide adequate sight distance as required by Rockdale County's road department, addressing corner visibility directly. Height itself is measured from normal finished grade to the highest point of the structure, and ornamental features like columns and gates may exceed the district maximum by up to 18 inches if spaced at least 10 feet apart. The director of planning and development can administratively approve a height increase up to 150 percent of the otherwise-allowable maximum under § 238-14, but any fence over 7 feet tall requires its own building permit and inspection by the chief building official, and any retaining wall over 4 feet requires the same.
