Rockdale County, GA Fence Regulations: Material Restrictions (2026)

Section 214-6, Fences, walls and hedges, lists materials banned outright across unincorporated Rockdale County: tires, scrap and sheet metal, plastic and fiberglass, medium density fiberboard and plywood, exposed common concrete block, junk, and other discarded materials are all prohibited construction materials for any fence, wall or hedge regardless of zoning district. The section separately bans plastic slats in any fence and bans solid, opaque fences entirely along any street right-of-way. The accompanying Table of Fence, Wall and Hedge Requirements then narrows what is affirmatively allowed by zoning category: standard residential districts (A-R, W-P, CRS, CSD, CSO, R-1, R-2, MUR, RM, M-H, R-1A, R-1B, R-3) may use ornamental metal, treated solid wood, vinyl boards, and masonry along the street right-of-way, with no wire fencing permitted there.

Barbed wire, hog wire, chicken wire, woven wire and chain link are allowed only for A-R and W-P lots of at least three acres that are developed with an agricultural use permitted under § 218-1, reflecting that farm fencing needs differ from ordinary residential yards. Fences must also be built with the finished side facing the adjoining property, and any opaque fence or landscape wall longer than 20 linear feet without a visual break, such as a column, setback or vegetative planting, is likewise not allowed.
