Santa Paula Zoning Ordinance limits fences to 3.5 feet in front yards and 6 feet in side and rear yards in residential zones. Corner lots have additional sight-triangle restrictions. Fences on retaining walls are measured from the top of the wall.
Under Santa Paula's zoning code, residential fence height limits are: 3.5 feet maximum in the required front yard setback area, and 6 feet maximum in side and rear yards. On corner lots, fences within the sight-triangle area (typically 10 feet from the intersection of property lines) must not exceed 3 feet to maintain driver visibility. Fence height is measured from the finished grade on the higher side. Fences atop retaining walls are measured from the lower grade β the combined height of wall plus fence must not exceed 6 feet in side/rear yards. Open-style fences (wrought iron, split rail) may be allowed up to 4 feet in front yards with approval. Community Development handles fence questions at (805) 933-4214.
Fences exceeding height limits without a variance are code violations. Property owners receive a notice with 30 days to bring the fence into compliance (lower or remove). Failure to comply results in fines of $100/day. Variances for taller fences require a public hearing before the Planning Commission.
