Terrebonne Parish, LA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Terrebonne Parish Code Sec. 28-74(g), part of the zoning ordinance's supplementary yard regulations, sets the parish's fence and wall height limits within the zoned areas of Terrebonne Parish (the Houma area). No fence or wall that obstructs sight may exceed four feet in a required front yard, and no fence or wall other than the wall of a permitted structure may exceed eight feet in a required side or rear yard. A tighter, safety-driven limit applies at driveways: no fence or wall taller than three feet can be erected within fifteen feet of a driveway's street line if it would block a driver's clear view of approaching traffic.

Corner lots carry an additional visibility-triangle rule under Sec. 28-72(c): on a corner building site where a front yard is required, no fence, wall, hedge, structure or planting taller than three feet may stand within the triangular area formed by the intersecting street lines and a line connecting points thirty feet from their intersection. Fences also factor into the parish's buffer-protection standard at Sec. 28-74(h): wherever a residential district's boundary is coterminous with a commercial or industrial district, the commercial or industrial side must maintain a brick, wood or vinyl fence at least six feet tall that obstructs view, subject to the zoning administrator's approval of design and specifications.

These fence height rules do not apply outside the zoned areas of Terrebonne Parish, since the four-, eight- and three-foot limits are part of Chapter 28 Zoning rather than Chapter 29 Land Use, which governs the unzoned balance of the parish.
