Full Breakdown

Sec. 140-149 of the zoning code caps any fence or wall erected on the property line, rear of the minimum required front yard line set by Sec. 140-140, at eight feet above adjacent grade. That front yard line is typically 25 feet from the property line in the single-family and two-family districts (SF-1, SF-2, SF-3, 2F-1, 2F-2, TH, MF-1, MF-2), 15 feet in commercial/office districts, and waived entirely downtown. Separately, no fence, wall, screen, or other visual barrier may obstruct a driver's vision at a street, alley, or drive intersection: clear vision must run 15 feet back from the property corner along both streets. The code does not set a distinct height cap for fences placed forward of the front yard line.

Violations & Fines

Exceeding the 8-foot cap or blocking the corner clear-vision zone violates the zoning ordinance; code enforcement can order the fence lowered, altered, or removed and can withhold related building permits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my backyard fence be taller than 8 feet?
No. Sec. 140-149 caps any fence or wall behind the required front yard line at 8 feet above adjacent grade, citywide, in every zoning district.
What's the rule for fences on a corner lot?
Fences can't block driver sightlines. Clear vision must be maintained 15 feet back from the property corner along both intersecting streets.
Is there a height limit for a fence in my front yard?
The code sets no specific cap for fences forward of the front yard setback line: it only regulates fences behind that line.
